This very special spirit is truly unique and you won’t find anything like it elsewhere in Australia. It is not a vodka or a brandy, as it is not distilled from grains, potatoes or fruit. It is actually distilled from honey (about three litres per bottle.) It then spends at least three years in oak barrels to produce a spirit with incredible length and balance. We are rather chuffed to have it on the shelf.
Only 4000 bottles are produced annually with 500 allotted to Poland’s president as diplomatic gifts. Each bottle is filled by hand with the bottle number and batch information also handwritten. Made following a 1772 recipe, the honey is sourced from the southern mountains, then blended with rye vodka, vanilla and herbs before being rested in oak casks. It is the best honey vodka in the world.
J. A. Baczewski was appointed vodka maker to the Imperial Court of the Hapsburg Empire, and coincidentally was awarded the gold medal in the Melbourne Exhibition in 1888. 125 years later it was rediscovered by Melbourne’s three most prominent vodka enthusiasts on a drunken afternoon in Lublin, and thank God we found it! In production since the 17th Century, it is an elegant clear potato vodka with citrus, floral and mineral notes, and our only vodka from Austria.
